Mental health disorders are highly complex, with varied symptoms that can have profound effects on wellbeing. Current research is focused on understanding the biology underlying these disorders and why some individuals are more at risk of developing a mental disorder than others. In this course, we will give examples from our research on how animal models can be used to study how these complex human disorders affect the brain. We will show how new computational tools enable us to measure changes in an animal’s behavior relevant to mental health disorders, and how we can link these behavioral changes to neurobiological mechanisms by combining behavioral phenotyping with omics-technologies.
